Wake Forest Finishes Friday Competition at Three Meets

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- One school record was broken and eight Demon Deacons placed in the top-10 as the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field programs wrapped up the first full day of competition in a trio of meets. The Demon Deacons are competing in the Stanford Invitational, Pepsi Florida Relays and High Point's VertKlasse Meeting this weekend.

Casidy Howard broke the school record for the women's Discus while competing at the Pepsi Florida Relays Gainesville, Fla. Howard had a best mark of 49.21m (161' 5"), good for fourth place and a new school record. She replaces the previous record mark of 48.85m (160' 3") that she set in 2015.

Elijah Shalaway kicked off the weekend of competition Thursday night with the men's Javelin at the Florida Relays. The freshman finished 22nd among some of the best athletes in the nation with a mark of 57.79m (189' 7").

Also at the Pepsi Florida Relays, Robert Heppenstall took fifth in the men's 800m run with a time of 1:47.75. The freshmen duo of Mitch Dyer and Angelos Vasileiou competed for the black and gold in the men's 1500m. Dyer finished 13th with a time of 3:48.60 while Vasileiou finished 41st with a time of 3:56.50, both season bests.

Eleven student-athletes competed at High Point's VertKlasse Meeting, despite stormy, dreary weather for most of the day.

Mitch Earley kicked off the competition in the men's Javelin where he placed ninth with a best mark of 48.04m (157' 7").

Also in the field, Amy Collins and Jordan Banks landed 24th and 28th-place in the Long Jump with marks of 5.20m (17' 0.75") and 5.12m (16' 9.75"), respectively. Jordan Banks took ninth in her High Jump section after clearing the 1.47m (4' 9.75").

On the track, Sarah Fahmy finished second in the women' 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 11:01.98. Beatrice Boylan was right behind with a third-place finish on a personal best time of 11:07.65. Gabby Merritt rounded out the event with a time of 11:46.57, good for 10th.

Kathryn Kenwood, competing in a field of 102 athletes, finished 41st in the 1500m Run with a time of 4:57.83.

On the men's side of the track, Andrew Fea took 14th in the 1500m with a time of 4:02.51. John Archie followed closely behind with a time of 4:02.95, good for 16th. Alex Delgado finished 43rd in the event with a time of 4:11.93.

In his first-ever 5000m run, Alex Turner took ninth, out of 63 athletes competing, with a time of 15:39.45.

In the only day of competition for the Deacs at the Stanford Invitational, Kathryn Lazarchick ran a personal best time of 4:20.83 in the women's 1500m, good for ninth in her section. Ellie Abrahamson took second in her 5000m section with a time of 16:01.35, a huge personal best. The senior had not competed in a 5K since her freshman season where she recorded a time of 17:43.74.

Competition in High Point's VertKlasse Meeting and the Pepsi Florida Relays resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
