Deacs Topped by Hurricanes in ACC Action

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The Wake Forest women's tennis team concluded its trip to Florida on Sunday, March 5, as the 28th-ranked Demon Deacons faced 44th-ranked Miami. The Deacs were topped by the Hurricanes, falling 4-0 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Saturday's competition between Wake Forest (11-3, 2-1 ACC) and Miami (4-4, 3-0 ACC) started with singles play instead of the typical setup of doubles play opening the action. The Deacs were unable to get anything going in singles competition, as the Hurricanes took five of the first six opening sets.
Emma Davis, ranked 86th in the country, was the first off the court, falling 6-1, 6-1 to 76th-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba in the No. 2 slot. Miami extended its lead to 2-0 as No. 97 Maci Epstein topped Joanna Zalewski, 6-1, 6-2 on court 3.
Luisa Fernandez fell in the No. 5 slot, 6-1, 6-2, as the Hurricanes pulled within a point of victory. Miami clinched the victory on the No. 1 court as seventh-ranked Sinead Lohan bested 67th-ranked Kimmy Guerin, 6-2, 6-3.
Chandler Carter, competing on the No. 4 court, claimed her first set, 6-4, and was trailing 3-2 in the second set when her match was halted. After dropping the first set of her No. 6 singles match, Courtney Meredith responded with a 6-0 victory in the second set to force a decisive third set, which was never played.
With Miami having claimed the four points for victory, doubles play between the two schools never began.
Wake Forest returns home and continues ACC play as the Demon Deacons play host to Notre Dame on Friday, March 17. First serve in Winston-Salem is set for 4 p.m.
