BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Bryant Crawford recorded a team-high 21 points as Wake Forest fell to Virginia Tech 99-90 Wednesday evening in the second round of the ACC Tournament at the Barclays Center.
With his 21 points, Crawford is the first Demon Deacon since Randolph Childress in 1994-95 with over 500 points and 150 assists in a season. John Collins recorded 15 points in the contest to become the first Demon Deacon with at least 600 points and 300 rebounds in a season since Tim Duncan in 1996-97. Crawford and Collins are the first Demon Deacon duo since Duncan and Childress to record 500 points in the same season.
Collins also recorded his 17th double-double of the season with his 15 points and 10 rebounds, tying Bonzie Colson of Notre Dame for the most in the ACC.
Brandon Childress recorded 15 points, one shy of his career high, while Konstantinos Mitoglou tallied his second double-double of the season, and sixth of his career, with 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Austin Arians rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Though Virginia Tech (22-9) got on the board first, Wake Forest (19-13) quickly regained the lead with a 9-0 run. The Hokies then capitalized on a Demon Deacon scoring drought to bring the score within one. Wake Forest built the lead back up to six with just under 12 minutes to go in the first half but Virginia Tech came right back to start a back-and-forth battle that lasted the rest of the half. The Deacs held the Hokies to 2-for-8 from the field in the final minutes to gain a slight advantage while a near cross-court lob from Greg McClinton as time expired in the half gave the Deacs a 44-37 lead entering halftime. It was McClinton's first career three-pointer. Collins and Childress each recorded 10 points in the opening frame on a combined 6-for-11 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
The Hokies opened the second frame hot from beyond the arc and managed to tie the score at 51-all. The teams traded baskets until Tech built up a six-point lead with just over six minutes remaining in the contest. The Demon Deacons called a timeout to break up the Hokie offense but Tech extended its lead to nine with over four minutes to go. The Deacs pulled within four with 29 seconds to go but the Hokies went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final seconds to seal the game in their favor, 99-90.
The Demon Deacons now await the NCAA Selection Show, airing Sunday on CBS at 5:30 p.m.
