FORT WORTH, Texas – Wake Forest junior Will Zalatoris is one of 10 golfers named a semifinalist for the 2017 Ben Hogan Award. The semifinalists were announced Wednesday by Colonial Country Club, the Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
It marks the first time Zalatoris was been named to the watch list for the prestigious award, annually given the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the past 12-month period. He is the first Demon Deacon to be named a semifinalist since Brendan Gielow in 2010.
Zalatoris is ranked No. 5 in the latest GolfStat individual rankings. He has one victory, at last month's General Hackler Championship, and has four top-5 finishes and seven top-10 finishes in nine events this season. He has a 69.92 stroke average in 2016-17 and could join Bill Haas (68.93 in 2003-04) as the only Demon Deacons to average under 70 for a season.
Zalatoris is joined on the semifinalist list by Sam Burns (LSU), Wyndham Clark (Oregon), Sean Crocker (USC), Jared du Toit (Arizona State), Nick Hardy (Illinois), Maverick McNealry (Stanford), Dylan Meyer (Illinois), Collin Morikawa (California) and Matthias Schwab (Vanderbilt).
On Wednesday, May 3, the semifinalists will be pared down to three finalists. The finalists will attend a black-tie banquet at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, on Monday, May 22, prior to the start of the PGA TOUR's Dean & DeLuca Invitational, where the winner will be crowned.
The Demon Deacons will return to action April 21-23 with the ACC Championship at Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, S.C.
