Deacs Topped by No. 14 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 26 Wake Forest women's tennis team was defeated, 5-2, by No. 14 Duke this Thursday afternoon at the Ambler Tennis Stadium.
The Demon Deacons (16-7, 6-5 ACC) trailed the Blue Devils (16-3, 10-0 ACC) the whole match as Duke took the doubles point. Courtney Meredith and Luisa Fernandez dropped a 6-3 decision on the third court before Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko earned a 6-4 victory on court No. 1, defeating the No.36-ranked team of Meible Chi and Kaitlyn McCarthy, to tie up the doubles score. Emma Davis and Chandler Carter battled in their set but came up short on the second court as they were topped 7-5.
Heading into singles down 1-0, Davis earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory against No. 33 Meible Chi on court No. 2 to even the match at 1-all. This win marked the 4th vicory over a ranked opponent for Davis this season. Playing third singles, Ulyashchenko was defeated by No. 50 Chalena Scholl 6-3, 6-0. On the sixth court, Courtney Meredith fell to Ellyse Hamlin 6-3, 6-3. Playing fifth singles, Fernandez battled to a tiebreak in the first set but came up short losing, 7-6 (7-3). Duke clinched the match as Fernandez dropped the second set 6-0.
Guerin, ranked 52 nationally, earned the Deacs their second point of the match thanks to a 7-5, 6-3 victory on the first court. The win was Guerin's 22nd win on the season which is the most by a Demon Deacon this season. Guerin advanced to 16-5 at the first singles spot. Lastly, Carter took on the task of playing fourth singles but was defeated 6-3, 7-5.
The Deacs return to action on Saturday, April 15 as they take on No. 3 North Carolina. First serve is set for 11 a.m at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
