Demon Deacons Finish Friday Competition at Two Meets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams wrapped up the first day of competition at the Charlotte Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays with one broken school record, one event title and six top-five finishes.

Charlie Ionata broke the school record in the men's Hammer Throw while Robert Heppenstall claimed the event title in his first-ever 1500m Run to highlight Friday's competition.

Ionata broke the men's Hammer Throw school record for the second time this season with a monster toss of 66.61m (218' 6") to claim second place at the Charlotte Invitational. Also in the field, Kyle Johnson took third in the men's Hammer Throw with a best mark of 59.05m (193' 9") while Elijah Shalaway threw a personal best mark of 58.94m (193' 4") in the Javelin.

On the women's side, Alva Hicks placed sixth in the women's Hammer Throw with a mark of 52.35m (171' 9") to round out the field events.

On the track, Heppenstall won his first-ever 1500m event with a time of 3:43.22. Eight Demon Deacons competed in the event alongside Heppenstall including Mitchell Dyer, who finished sixth with a time of 3:50.96, and Alexander Giacco, who set a personal best with a time of 3:55.66, good for 12th place. Craig Corti and Alex Turner set personal best times at 3:59.37 and 4:03.65, respectively, while Robbie Barr finished with a time of 4:06.70. Jack McGowen shaved 10 seconds off his previous best time to finish at 4:06.90 and Alex Delgado also set a personal best at 4:10.31. Myers McKinney rounded out the event with a personal best time of 4:11.35.

In the women's 1500m, Jenna Truedson and Lara-Ann Schwede finished 11th and 12th with times of 4:36.34 and 4:37.09, respectively. Schwede set a personal best with the mark, replacing the 4:38.92 she ran earlier this season. Beatrice Boylan finished at 4:39.39, Mimi Smith ran 4:40.97 and Sarah Fahmy closed out the group with a time of 4:47.28.

In her first-ever 5000m Run, Kathryn Kenwood finished fourth with a time of 18:17.46 while Andrew Fea took third in the men's 800m fast section with a personal best time of 1:51.75 to wrap up Friday competition for the Deacs at the Charlotte Invitational.

At the Mt. SAC Relays event in Torrance, Calif., Hunter Roberts finished 11th in a field of 43 in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 14.17. Jen Esposito is set to run in the women's 400m Hurdles at 7:05 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Competition in the Charlotte Invitational resumes Saturday, April 15 with field events beginning at 9 a.m. and track events at noon.
