PITTSBURGH, PA. – The 28th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team jumped out to a 4-0 lead before topping Pittsburgh by a 5-2 margin Friday evening at the Alpha Tennis & Fitness Center.
The Demon Deacons (15-6, 5-4 ACC) jumped out to an early lead over Pittsburgh (3-11, 0-10 ACC), taking the first two doubles matches to secure the point. Emma Davis and Chandler Carter cruised at the No. 2 spot, opening the play Friday with a 6-1 victory. Courtney Meredith and Alexis Franco battled at No. 3 doubles, eventually sliding by with a 6-4 victory to clinch the point.
The top doubles match featuring Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko saw the Deacs leading 6-5 when play was halted with the doubles point in hand.
Wake Forest's momentum carried into singles competition, as the Deacs took five of the first six sets over the Panthers. Luisa Fernandez quickly took care of business at No. 5 singles, collecting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Clara Lucas. Meredith, playing No. 6 singles, followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to put the Demon Deacons within a point of clinching.
Davis secured the win for the Deacs at the No. 2 spot, as she blanked Audrey Ann Blakely in the second set to clinch the match, 6-3, 6-0.
With the match in hand, the final three matches all went to three sets. After dropping the first set, Ulyashchenko battled back from a defeat in the opening set to even the match with a 6-3 decision in the second set at No. 3 singles. In the end, Ulyashchenko couldn't maintain the momentum, falling 10-1 in the deciding tiebreaker.
Guerin, ranked 45th nationally, claimed the first set 7-5 before being pushed to a third set against Amber Washington. The two would need extra points in the 10-point tiebreaker, with Guerin ultimately falling 13-11.
The final match saw Carter take the first set 6-2 before dropping the second set in a tiebreaker. Carter would close out her match, and play Friday evening, with a 10-7 tiebreaker victory to seal the 5-2 victory.
Wake Forest remains on the road for a Sunday, April 9 match at Louisville. First serve is set for 11 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
