SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Wake Forest junior Will Zalatoris is in contention after the first two rounds of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. Zalatoris is tied for sixth place at 6-under after 36 holes, two shots off the lead.
Scottie Scheffler of Texas holds the second-round lead at 8-under. He is one-shot ahead of four players at 7-under and two shots ahead of an eight-way tie for sixth place at 6-under, including Zalatoris.
Zalatoris began the day by concluding his first round, which had been interrupted by weather on Friday and was halted for darkness after nine holes. After starting the day at 1-under, the ACC Player of the Year posted three birdies on the back nine to shoot a 4-under 68.
In the second round, Zalatoris had an early birdie before three bogeys moved him to 2-over for the round as he made the turn. Back-to-back birdies got him back to par for the round before an eagle on the par-5 No. 7 returned him to red figures as he closed out a 2-under 70.
"Coach and I were a great team today," said Zalatoris. "He helped me grind through the tough middle stretch of holes in the second round. I'm glad I got it going on the final nine holes of the day as it keeps me close to the leaders heading into moving day."
The tournament's third round is scheduled for Sunday. The final round of stroke play, for teams and individuals who make the cut, will be Monday with television coverage on the Golf Channel.
