The Matchup
No. 17 Wake Forest returns from its break for exams, playing host to Boston College for a three-game ACC series May 5-7.
Last Time Out
Johnny Aiello totaled three hits, two homers and five RBIs to lead Wake Forest to a 12-6 win at Davidson on April 26.
With no games over the weekend, all three regular weekend starting pitchers received work. Parker Dunshee struck out five in 3.0 shutout frames, Connor Johnstone tossed 1.2 innings and Donnie Sellers added 1.1 innings in relief in the Wednesday game.
Wake Forest Storylines
The Deacons are a consensus top-25 team for the first time in more than a decade. Wake Forest is ranked by Baseball America (17), NCBWA (20), USA Today Coaches (20), Collegiate Baseball (20), D1Baseball (21) and Perfect Game (23).
Wake Forest picked up its 30th win in its fewest number of games since 2006, when the Deacs did so in 43 games (30-13 start).
Three different Demon Deacons have double-digit home run totals: Gavin Sheets (15), Johnny Aiello (15) and Stuart Fairchild (11), with Bruce Steel (nine) right behind. The last time Wake Forest had at least three players in double figures was 2001: Jamie D'Antona (17), Carlos Brackley (14), Cory Sullivan (13) and Corey Slavik (10).
Wake Forest is holding its annual Strike Out ALS game on Sunday. The event honors Pete Moffitt (`84), an alum and lifelong Deacon fan who passed away in 2013, as well as Pete Frates, a former BC baseball captain battling ALS who spearheaded the Ice Bucket Challenge, and Chris Combs, a former Wolfpack baseball player and current NCSU staff member also fighting ALS. Strike Out ALS shirts will be available for a donation of at least $20 to The ALS Association NC Chapter.
Additionally, Friday will serve as Wake Forest's Military Appreciation Night. Military members and their immediate family members receive free admission to the game.
Opponent And Series History
Wake Forest holds a slight edge in the all-time series over the Eagles, 17-16. Boston College has a recent advantage, though, claiming three of the last four, including a series win in Chestnut Hill a year ago.
Boston College enters the weekend with an 18-24 overall record and 7-17 ACC mark. The Eagles have won six of their last nine ACC games, including a sweep of NC State and series win at Duke. They're currently a game back of Virginia Tech for the potential 12th and final spot in the ACC Tournament.
Looking Ahead
Wake Forest has a pair of midweek games next week: home vs. High Point (May 9) and at Radford (May 10).
