DURHAM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's tennis team opened the fall collegiate schedule Friday afternoon, as three Demon Deacons competed at the Duke James Bonk Invite.
Redshirt sophomore Alan Gadjiev, the No. 4 seed in the A1 flight, moved into the winner's bracket of the draw with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Constandinos Christoforou of Charlotte. In the quarterfinals, Gadjiev will face Mario Paccini of Elon, who won his opening round match, 7-5, 6-1.
Two Deacs made their collegiate debut in Yuval Solomon and Sean Patrick. Solomon, a true freshman, was in the A2 flight where he drew Josh Peck of North Carolina, the No. 3 seed in the flight. Solomon was unable to secure his first collegiate victory, falling 6-0, 6-4 to Peck. In the consolation draw, Solomon will face Diego Vives of Princeton.
Patrick, who redshirted last season after enrolling at Wake Forest a semester early, faced Jason Lapidus of Duke in the opening round of the B flight. Patrick also dropped his opening-round match, 6-3, 6-2. In the consolation draw he will take on Oriol Puig Forne from Charlotte.
Gadjiev and Patrick also paired up in the A1 doubles flight, but fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (5), to Princeton's duo of Kaiser and Vives. In the first round of consolation action, the duo dropped an 8-4 decision to Sholl/Plentz of George Washington. They will wrap up competition against Duarte/Deshmukh of North Florida.
Action at the Duke James Bonk Invite will continue Saturday afternoon and will conclude on Sunday.
