MALIBU, CALIF. -- Top-seeded Petros Chrysochos advanced in his opening round match of the 2017 Oracle ITA Masters, which began play on Thursday (Sept. 24).
The field is comprised of one of the top players from each conference in Division I, as well as a few wildcard entries to fill out the 32-player singles field.
Ranked third nationally, Chrysochos is the highest-ranked player in the field and drew Matt Kuhar of Bryant in the opening round. After cruising to an early 6-2 victory in the opening set, Chrysochos found himself down a break midway through the second set. The junior broke back and then claimed the final service game to close out the 7-5 victory in the second set.
In the Round of 16, Chrysochos will face Adam Moundir, the No. 17 seed, from Old Dominion. Moundir opened play with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over No. 16 seed Simon Freund.
Chrysochos also took place in the mixed doubles event, which pairs the men's field with the 32-player women's field. There, he teamed up with North Carolina's Sara Daavettila, the No. 5 seed in the women's draw. Seeded second in the doubles field, the duo topped the tandem of Ramos and Nguyen (Boston/Army), 6-2. Chrysochos and Daavettila would not advance to the quarterfinals, however, as the duo retired via walkover.
Play will continue Friday with two rounds of singles play.
