WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team swept its season-opening doubleheader with a pair of 7-0 wins over Furman and College of Charleston.

The Demon Deacons (2-0) did not drop a set in either of the two matches in their impressive start to the 2018 season.

In the day's first match against the Paladins (1-1), Wake Forest got off to a hot start by winning all three doubles matches. Playing in the No. 1 doubles slot, the No. 42 ranked duo of Eliza Omirou and Anna Ulyashchenko took their match, 6-3, before Mary Caroline Meredith and Joanna Zalewski won at No. 3 to clinch the opening point for the Deacons.

With the point already clinched, Emma Davis and Chandler Carter also won, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot to complete the perfect start to the season for Wake Forest.

In singles play, the Deacs took all six matches in straight sets. Davis clinched first, with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Katarina Kozarov in the No. 1 spot. Seconds later, Meredith closed out a 6-1, 6-0 win in the no. 6 slot, putting the Demon Deacons one win away from clinching the match.

Carter won at the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-3, to ensure the Deacs a 1-0 start to their season. Omirou rallied from down 2-0 in the second set to win 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 while Ulyashchenko and Zalewski each picked up straight-set wins to help Wake Forest complete the sweep.

It was more of the same for Wake Forest in its second match of the day against College of Charleston (1-1) as the team dominated doubles play to take a 1-0 match lead.

In singles competition, the Demon Deacons continued their solid play, as Davis dispatched College of Charleston's Christi Woodson, 6-0, 6-0. Omirou picked up her first career win at no. 1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Helena Nyikos. Moments later, Wake Forest clinched the match on Meredith's 6-3, 6-0 win at no. 5.

Both Anna Ulyashchenko and Chandler Carter fought off tiebreaks to earn straight-set victories in the no. 3 and no. 4 positions.

Up next, the Deacs head to Columbus, Ohio to take part in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, starting next Firday, Jan. 26 with a 1 p.m. match against Arkansas.
