Botzer Advances to Carolina Regional Semifinals

DURHAM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's tennis team continued competition at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships Sunday (Oct. 14), with Bar Botzer advancing to the semifinals of the singles draw.
The three Deacs still alive in the main draw following the end of play Friday, Botzer, Rrezart Cungu and Julian Zlobinsky, all won their Round of 32 matches on Saturday. Sunday morning saw Cungu and Botzer win their respective matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Cungu defeated Zac Talic of Coastal Carolina (7-6(6), 6-3 while Botzer topped 16th-seeded Daniel Rodrigues of South Carolina, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Zlobinsky's run ended in the Round of 16, falling to Maximillian Scholl of Gardner Webb, 6-1, 6-4.
In the quarterfinals Sunday afternoon, Botzer topped 123rd-ranked and eighth-seeded Bo Boyden of North Carolina, 7-6(5), 7-6(6). Cungu drew the top seed in the tournament, #27 Paul Jubb of South Carolina, and fell short, 6-3, 6-2.
The weekend also saw the doubles draw begin. The duo of Sean Patrick and Ryan Mueller won their opening round match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 over the team of Barn/Cucalon of NC Central before falling in the Round of 32.
Botzer will face Luca Keist of Charlotte, the No. 13 seed, in the semifinals on Monday. Play is expected to begin at 10 a.m.
