TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore Bar Botzer came from behind to secure a spot in the Round of 32 at the ITA All-American Championships Thursday (Oct. 4) afternoon.
After winning three matches in the qualifying draw, the 91st-ranked Botzer drew Miami's 92nd-ranked Bojan Jankulovski in the opening round of the main draw. Botzer stormed out of the gates, quickly taking the opening set, 6-2. After Jankulovski narrowly claimed a 7-5 decision in the second set, Botzer found himself facing a 5-2 deficit in the third set.
The sophomore from Tel Aviv, Israel then won four consecutive games to take a 6-5 lead, with the serve. But Botzer was broken, forcing a third-set tiebreaker. Botzer never trailed in the tiebreaker, taking a 7-3 decision to advance to the Round of 32 where he'll face the No. 2 seed, third-ranked Mazen Osama of Alabama.
Melios Efstathiou's run through qualifying came to an end in the opening round of the main draw Thursday, falling to Stanford's Alexandre Rotsaert, 7-5, 6-4. Efstathiou will fall into the consolation draw and both Deacs will continue play on Friday.
