Wake Forest Concludes Myrtle Beach Invitational with 69-63 Victory over Valpo

CONWAY, S.C.- Wake Forest basketball topped Valparaiso 69-63 on Sunday at the Myrtle Beach Invitational in the teams' first ever meeting.
Jaylen Hoard continued his streak of double-digit scoring with a team-high 14 points and 9 rebounds. The freshman has finished in double-digits in all four of Wake Forest's games this season. Freshman Isaiah Mucius added 13 points, while Sharone Wright Jr., and Brandon Childress each contributed 12.
The Deacs took the lead after a 9-0 run in the first half gave them an 18-12 lead eight minutes into the contest. Wake Forest pushed the lead to as many as nine in the first half before taking a 33-30 lead into the break. The Demon Deacon freshmen combined for 25 of the 33 points, led by Wright's nine.
The Deacon defense held the Crusaders scoreless for just under five minutes as Wake took its largest lead of the half with a 27-20 advantage.
With just seconds remaining in the first half, the Deacs recorded an offensive rebound and layup from Wright, but Valpo went into the break with momentum as the Crusaders capped the first frame with two free throws and a dunk to get within three at 33-30.
Out of the break, Valpo pulled ahead 36-33 following six unanswered points. Wake Forest got back on the board with a free throw from Hoard followed by a triple from junior Brandon Childress as the Deacons regained a 39-38 lead. The pace picked up as both teams took turns trading baskets. Torry Johnson notched back-to-back field goals, his first points of the game, to keep the Deacons on top 54-53 with just over six minutes remaining.
A 6-0 run for the Deacons within a span of one minute pushed Wake Forest's lead to 62-54. Following a few free throws from the Crusaders, Wright answered on the other end with a three as Wake regained a nine-point advantage with just over two minutes to play. Wake Forest shot 5-of-7 (71 percent) from beyond the arc in the second half and finished the game 7-for-16 from three.
Valparaiso crawled back into the game pulling within four, but Childress sealed the six-point victory with a couple of free throws as Wake Forest improved to 3-1 on the season.
The Deacons returns home to host Houston Baptist on Nov. 23 for a Black Friday matinee. The Deacs and Huskies tipoff at 2 p.m. and the game will air on ACC Network Extra.
