Postgame Quotes
Opening Statement:
"I thought Belmont Abbey came out and played hard. I thought they did really well at executing their offense. They had 38 points at halftime. We need to do a better job of contesting shots and taking care of the basketball. I thought we did some pretty good things and I was pleased with the effort we had crashing the offensive glass, getting extra possessions and second chance points. We will definitely have a lot of footage to show, and to improve on."
On his takeaways:
"Judging from the stat sheet, it won't be just one thing to focus on. We have to make sure that we come out and be where we are supposed to be defensively. When a shot goes up we have to make sure that we box out to prevent second chance opportunities. I think getting open and executing our offense is something we need to improve on, even playing against a zone defense."
On the newcomers learning the system:
"We've got 10 new guys, so our playbook is not as extensive as it has been in the past. This is the most zone defense we've played this season since we started practicing. We still have to get the ball into the high post and shoot it from the corner better. Our guys have to make better reads."
"We're a longer team, so I think that contributes to why we were able to out rebound them. I think our guys did a good job of getting to the offensive glass and getting rebounds. However, I think our offensive and defensive rebound ratio needs to be a bit better. I thought our guys put forth a good effort and gave us the opportunity to get more possessions."
Wake Forest freshman forward Jaylen Hoard
On expectations against a Division II team:
"We didn't know much about the team coming in. As far as our play, we just wanted to play hard and it worked out for us. It felt pretty good."
On team chemistry:
"The team has been getting along really well. It has been faster than I expected. During the offseason, the players spend a lot of time together and that has really helped us perform on the court."
Belmont Abbey Head Coach Billy Taylor
Opening Statement:
"It was a great opportunity for the student-athletes to come here and compete against Coach Manning and his club. They have a lot of length and tremendous talent, young talent. I think they'll be a special group in the ACC this year. We were excited for the opportunity to come and play here this year. I think we played really hard and competed, even when things didn't go our way I thought our guys continued to battle and play with a lot of energy and positivity… I was really proud of them for that."
"This was our third exhibition/scrimmage and again I think we've grown every time we've stepped on the floor. I am excited about what's to come for us."
