Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team (8-17, 3-10 ACC) dropped in five sets (25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 20-25, 15-5) to in-state foe NC State on Friday evening at Reynolds Coliseum.
Myca Mitchell led the efforts for the Deacons at the net with 16 kills, while sophomore setter Madeline Holt notched 40 assists and Hailey Brooke McFadden added a team-high 14 digs. For NC State, Teni Sopitan collected 20 kills and two blocks.
NC State (11-12, 5-8 ACC) took a 1-0 lead in the match, taking the first set 25-21. The Deacons went on a 4-0 run to take their largest lead of the set at 18-14 until the Wolfpack went on a 4-0 run of their own to even the frame. Tied at 21-all, a Wolfpack kill and three miscues from the Deacons handed NC State the first set.
The Deacs answered back to even the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 set two victory. Wake Forest hit .276 with a match-high 13 kills in the set after posting just a .086 hitting percentage in the first frame.
Down 20-11 in the third set, the Deacons rallied to win late points. Wake won seven of eight to pull within four at 21-17. Another big run from the Deacons tied the set at 23-23, but the Wolfpack sealed the 2-1 match advantage taking the final two points of the frame.
NC State jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the final frame and closed the match with a 15-5 decision. The Wolfpack hit a staggering .700 in the final set and held Wake Forest to a negative hitting percentage and just two kills.
Wake Forest will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 4 at North Carolina. First serve is set for 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
