Brandon Childress led the Deacons with 18 points

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest men's basketball returned to the LJVM Coliseum on Saturday afternoon, but fell to the Gardner-Webb Running Bulldogs, 73-69.

Junior guard Brandon Childress led the Wake Forest scoring with 18 points, while Torry Johnson, Jaylen Hoard and Chaundee Brown each dropped a dozen. Olivier Sarr tied a career-high with nine boards.

France scored the initial six points for Wake Forest from the free throw line as Hoard went 4-4 and Sarr added a pair.

After a slow start, Brown ignited the spark with back-to-back triples to give the Deacs a 12-7 lead. Isaiah Mucius added another three with 7:12 remaining in the half as Wake Forest took a 17-12 advantage. Gardner-Webb rallied back to pull within one and eventually took a short lead, but the Deacs finished the half with a two-point 28-26 lead.

Both sides traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second frame, but a 9-0 run from the Running Bulldogs gave the lead back to Gardner-Webb, 48-42 with just under six minutes to play.

The Bulldogs held on to the momentum, drawing a foul behind the arch to convert three free throws to extend the lead 51-42 and followed with a three from Nate Johnson. The triple extended Gardner-Webb's run to 15-0, the longest run allowed by the Deacons this season.

A jumper from Mucius, two made free throws from Johnson and a triple from Childress put the Deacons back in contention, down 57-50 with 1:47 remaining.

The late threes continued to fall for the Deacs as Childress lead the offensive charge for Wake Forest hitting another one from behind the arch with just under one minute to play to pull the Deacs within six, 61-55. Another triple, this time from Brown, cut the deficit to five with 55 seconds remaining. Johnson picked up a season-high 12 points following a clutch three-pointer with 22 seconds on the clock.

Five made free throws from Childress made it a three-point contest with just eight seconds to play, but a free throw on the other end sealed the game and extended Gardner-Webb's win streak to eight games.

Wake Forest returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 2 as it welcomes Cornell to the LJVM Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ACCNE.
