Wake Forest defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 78-67, to secure its third consecutive win
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind a double-double from Ona Udoh, the Wake Forest women's basketball team defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 78-67, Saturday (Dec. 8) inside the LJVM Coliseum.
Udoh was 7-of-8 from the field and finished with 15 points while adding 10 rebounds to secure her second double-double of the season.
The junior was joined in double figures by Elisa Penna, who scored a team-high 23 points and Ivana Raca, who added 15. Alex Sharp nearly matched Udoh with a double-double by bringing in 10 rebounds and scoring nine points. Gina Conti matched a season-high with nine assists, one shy of her career best, and added eight points.
The Demon Deacons took control early against Maryland Eastern Shore (2-7), using a 10-0 run to take a 19-8 lead late in the opening quarter. Raca began the run with a pair of free throws, while three-pointers from Penna and Kaylen Dickson forced a timeout by the Hawks.
Wake Forest maintained a double-digit lead throughout much of the second quarter, taking a 14-point lead into the halftime break. The lead grew to 23 midway through the third as the Deacs opened the second half outscoring Maryland Eastern Shore 11-2 over the first 4:38 of the half.
The visitors put pressure on the Deacs to open the fourth, as back-to-back-to-back three-pointers helped eventually cut the deficit down to eight with 4:40 left in the game. Wake Forest maintained its composure, scoring its final seven points from the free throw line to close out the 11-point victory.
The Deacs dominated the glass, outrebounding The Shore 42-28, marking the 10th consecutive game in which Wake Forest has tallied more rebounds than its opponents.
Wake Forest has next week off for final exams before returning to action on Monday, December 17, to face James Madison in the team's annual School Day game. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. inside the LJVM Coliseum.
