Elisa Penna hit a pair of free throws with 0.9 seconds remaining to give Wake Forest a one-point victory
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With 0.9 seconds remaining in the game, senior Elisa Penna connected on a pair of free throws to push Wake Forest past James Madison, 50-49, Monday morning in the team's annual School Day game.
Playing in front of 9,786 fans, the second-most in program history, the Demon Deacons (7-4) were trailing by one point with 6.1 seconds remaining. Penna, who struggled from the field Monday, missed on a pull-up jumper but was able to track down her own shot and draw the foul in the process. The senior calmly hit a pair from the charity stripe. The Deacs stole the inbounds pass, sealing the victory and sending the packed LJVM Coliseum into a frenzy.
The Deacs had a pair of players record double-doubles, as Ona Udoh (12 pts, 14 reb) and Alex Sharp (12 pts, 11reb) led the way. For Udoh, it is the third of her career, with all three coming this season, while Sharp tallied her second double-double of the season (10th of her career). Ivana Raca added a team-high 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
James Madison (6-3) scored on its opening possession before the Deacs rattled off 10 consecutive points early in the first quarter to take a 10-2 lead. Wake Forest would maintain the lead from the 7:25 mark of the first quarter until the 3:06 mark of the third quarter before the Dukes finally pulled back in front, 30-29. Over the final 13:06 there would be eight lead changes and seven ties, as neither team was able to build a lead larger than five.
Despite its shooting struggles, the Deacs were able to hold off the Dukes thanks to a sizable advantage at the charity stripe. As a team, the Deacs were +10 in free throws made, going 20-of-29 from the line compared to 10-of-15 for James Madison.
The Deacs now hit the road to close out the road portion of their nonconference schedule on Wednesday, December 19, as the Demon Deacons face South Carolina State in Myrtle Beach as part of the Carolinas College Challenge. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.
