SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Despite 13 strikeouts combined from Griffin Roberts and Shane Muntz, Wake Forest fell to Santa Clara, 2-0, in the series-opener at Schott Stadium on Friday night.

Roberts fanned a career-high 10 batters in 6.1 innings, but took the tough-luck loss. He surrendered a pair of runs on six hits and three walks, while Muntz was perfect in 1.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

The big hit once again evaded the Demon Deacons (2-4), though. Wake Forest left 14 runners on base - including two in each of the final six innings - finishing 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. The Broncos (3-2) pitchers combined to strike out 16 Deacs.

The Deacs drew eight walks in the game while walking only three Broncos. Muntz led Wake Forest's offense with a 2-for-4 effort, also adding a walk. Bobby Seymour reached base three times with a single and two walks.

Steven Wilson earned the win for Santa Clara, striking out five in 2.0 innings. Alex Barden fanned five in 3.2 innings, Michael Praszker struck out a pair in an inning, and Eric Lex struck out four over the final 2.1 innings to earn the save.

Jake Brodt tallied an RBI single in the first and John Cresto hit a solo homer in the fourth. No Broncos recorded two hits in the game.

Game two of the series is set for 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT) on Saturday.
