WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A big seventh inning proved to be the difference for No. 3 Florida State, which defeated Wake Forest, 7-3, in the ACC opener at David F. Couch Ballpark on Friday night.

The Demon Deacons (5-9, 0-1 ACC) battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth, but the Seminoles (14-0, 1-0 ACC) plated five runs in the seventh to pull away.

Jake Mueller recorded two hits to lead the Wake Forest offense, while Antonio Menendez and Tyler Witt had scoreless outings out of the pen.

After FSU scored a pair in the fourth, Wake Forest got on the board in the fifth. Michael Ludowig and Cole McNamee started the inning with singles. Then, Patrick Frick hit a liner off the pitcher which bounced to the third baseman who recorded the out, but Ludowig crossed the plate on the play to make the score 2-1.

In the sixth, Mueller singled and stole second, scoring on an RBI single up the middle by Shane Muntz to knot the game at 2-2.

The Seminoles pulled in front for good in the seventh, thanks to a Jackson Lueck two-run homer, Drew Mendoza two-run double and Rafael Bournigal RBI single.

Griffin Roberts (2-2) took the loss for the Deacs despite striking out 10+ for the third-straight outing.

Menendez struck out a pair in relief, while Tyler Witt tossed 1.1 scoreless frames to end the game.

For FSU, Cole Sands (4-0) earned the win by allowing two runs on five hits and a walk in 6.0 innings with nine strikeouts. Jonah Scolaro earned his third save, allowing one unearned run in 3.0 innings with five strikeouts.

The series will wrap up on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
