WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team was selected to the NCAA Columbus Regional as the fields of the six NCAA regionals were announced Wednesday (May 2). The Demon Deacons will be the No. 5 seed in Columbus, as action will take place May 14-16 at the Ohio State Scarlet Course.
The top five teams at each of the six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships, held May 25-30 in Stillwater, Okla.
Oklahoma State is the top seed at the Columbus Regional, followed by the Illinois, Texas Tech, UNLV and the Demon Deacons. Northwestern, Penn State, Tennessee, Louisville, Jacksonville, Michigan State, Yale and Cleveland State round out the field.
Wake Forest has a rich history at the OSU Scarlet Course. The Demon Deacons last visited the course in 2008 when they won the NCAA Central Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships. Wake Forest won the 1975 NCAA Championship in Columbus, with Jay Haas taking the individual title. The Demon Deacons also were runner-up at the 1970 and 1987 NCAA Championships at the Scarlet Course.
"We are excited to be headed to Columbus for another NCAA Regional," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The Demon Deacons have had a lot of success over the years on the Scarlet Course and it is a course that is plays to the strengths of our team. Like any regional, there is a strong field, but we are looking forward to the challenge."
Wake Forest will be making its 29th NCAA Regional appearance since the current format was adopted in 1989. The Demon Deacons have advanced from regional play to the NCAA Championships 15 times, including regional victories in 2005, 2006 and 2008.
The Demon Deacons, ranked No. 25 nationally, are coming off a third place finish at the 2018 ACC Championships, which were held April 20-22 at the Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C.
