WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Emma Davis and Chandler Carter ousted Stanford's third-seeded doubles team of Michaela Gordon and Emily Arbuthnott, 6-3, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon in the NCAA Doubles Championship First Round.
The duo continued their strong recent play, as they broke Gordon and Arbuthnott midway through the first set and never looked back on their way to a dominating upset victory.
After taking the first set, 6-3, Carter and Davis found themselves up two breaks and serving for the match at 5-2. While the Cardinal survived three match points to force the match to another game, Carter's volley gave the Deacs another break and the 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The win marks the first time a Wake Forest doubles team has won a match at the NCAA Championships since Kathryn Talbert and Kayla Duncan in 2011.
In three of their past four matches, Davis and Carter have defeated a top-15 doubles team. They took down No. 3 Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham from North Carolina in the ACC Championship Quarterfinals before a win over No. 12 Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh of Arizona State in the NCAA Championships First Round.
In the Round of 16, the duo will face Winthrop's Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman on Friday (May 24) at 12:30 p.m. In Wake Forest's 7-0 victory over the Eagles on March 11, Proctor and Kauffman prevailed, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles.
With a win tomorrow, the pair would become the first Deacon doubles pairing to reach the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals since Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman in 2002.
