Wake Forest held a 10-8 advantage in shots in the regular-season opener
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team fell to Northwestern, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Hoosier Challenge Cup at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Demon Deacons (0-1-0) held an initial advantage in shots but an early goal from the Wildcats (2-0-0) proved to be the difference. Nia Harris put Northwestern on the board in the 6th minute on a through ball from Brenna Lovera. Though Nonie Frishette made a diving leap to try to stop the shot, the ball sailed just past the keeper.
Despite the 1-0 disadvantage, the Deacs had early offensive opportunities from Hannah Betfort and Peyton Peera. Wake Forest led 5-2 in shots in the first half and held a 7-1 advantage in corners, but Northwestern held on to the lead at the break.
The Deacs had a quick offensive attack in attempt to even the score in the 57th minute. Bayley Feist and Estelle Laurier fired off shots that were blocked before Feist's second attempt was saved by the Northwestern keeper. Ryanne Brown then attempted a header in the 59th minute but the shot went wide.
The Wildcats doubled their lead in the 65th minute when Madi Kennel crossed the ball in from the left and Lovera headed it in on the far side to give Northwestern the 2-0 victory.
Frishette recorded four saves and played all 90 minutes in goal. Betfort and Feist led the Deacs with three shots each, one on goal, while Perea also had a shot on target.
Giovanna DeMarco and Oliwia Wos made their first official starts as Demon Deacons while Ashley Frank subbed into the game in the 37th minute.
Up next, the Demon Deacons take on Tennessee in the 2018 home opener on Aug. 23. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
