WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 13 Tennessee Thursday night in the 2018 home opener.
Bayley Feist scored for the Demon Deacons (0-1-1), her 16th career goal and first of the season.
Feist started the offensive attack for the Demon Deacons early with a shot in the 6th minute that missed the net by inches. Hannah Betfort also got off an early attempt that was blocked by a Tennessee (2-0-1) defender.
After breaking away from the Tennessee defense, Feist put the Deacs on the board in the 33rd minute on a one-timer assisted by Betfort from 15-yards out. The assist was the second of Betfort's career as the Deacs took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Demon Deacons took an early 5-2 advantage in shots in the second half, with two shots from Estelle Laurier and one each from Giovanna DeMarco, Peyton Perea and Feist.
However, after a Wake Forest foul, Tennessee's Katie Cousins tied the game 1-all in the 60th minute on a free kick from 20-yards out. Nonie Frishette almost made the grab as the ball went right over her gloves on the diving reach.
From there, play remained even with Tennessee holding a slight 4-3 advantage in shots for the rest of regulation. The Deacons almost took the game in the 79th minute with a rocket from Feist. However, the Tennessee keeper made a leaping save at the final second to keep the score knotted at 1-all.
Both Wake Forest and Tennessee managed a shot each in both the first and second overtime periods. The Deacs ended up with a 14-12 advantage in tries, though the Volunteers held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Feist led the Deacs with four attempts, three of which were on target. Perea and Betfort each had three attempts, Laurier finished with two and Gi DeMarco and Ashley Frank each had a shot.
Frishette spent all 110 minutes in goal, recording a career-high seven saves. Entering tonight, Frishette's high was just one, accomplished three times in her career.
Up next, the Demon Deacons face College of Charleston on Sunday, Aug. 26. Game time at Spry Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
