Final Box
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Peyton Perea's golden goal in the 101st minute gave the Wake Forest women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over College of Charleston Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium.
Just 42 seconds into the second overtime period, a cross from Estelle Laurier found Perea on the far side of the goal. Perea was able to head the ball in the space between the keeper and the post to give the Demon Deacons (1-1-1) their first victory of the season.
The Deacs took an early 5-1 advantage in shots over the Cougars (2-2-0) in the opening 12 minutes of play with two attempts each from Ryanne Brown and Giovanna DeMarco and one from Hannah Betfort.
However, it was DeMarco that put the Deacs on the board with her first collegiate goal in the 33rd minute. DeMarco fired a rocket of a shot from the top of the box with both Abby McNamara and Madison Hammond chipping in for the assists. It was McNamara's second career assist and Hammond's third as the Deacs took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Despite the Cougars getting an early jump in shots attempted in the second half, Laurier doubled the lead for the Demon Deacons in the 63rd minute on a one-timer off a cross from DeMarco. The goal was Laurier's first of the season and fourth of her career.
College of Charleston then cut the Deacs' lead in half in the 68th minute when Kacey Smekrud fired an unassisted goal from 30-yards out.
Perea nearly put Wake Forest up 3-1 in the 82nd minute but the shot from the top corner of the box hit the crossbar. However, Charleston's Alyssa Beck tied the game 2-all in the 88th minute. The shot came from 25-yards out and hit both the posts before falling into the goal.
In the first overtime period, Wake Forest out-shot Charleston, 3-1, but neither team could find the goal. Still tied 2-all, Perea landed the golden goal just 42 seconds into the final overtime period.
Hulda Arnarsdottir recorded 32 minutes in Sunday's contest. It was her first game since an injury suffered against Princeton on Sept. 4, 2017. Oryann Addison made her first debut as a Deacon, checking in at the 40th minute mark, while Lily Schneider made her first appearance of the season in the 75th minute.
Brown led the Deacs with four shots Sunday afternoon, including one on goal. Both DeMarco and Betfort had two shots on target as the Deacs out-shot the Cougars 20-16.
Up next, the Demon Deacons face Michigan at Spry Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 30. That game is set for 7 p.m. and will air on ACC Network Extra.
