WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In front of 4,751 fans in his collegiate debut, Kyle Holcomb scored a golden goal to propel No. 5 Wake Forest past No. 2 Indiana in the second overtime period at Spry Stadium on Friday night.
He became the first-ever freshman Deacon to score an overtime golden goal in his season-opener.
With the Demon Deacons (1-0-0) and Hoosiers (0-1-0) less than four minutes away from finishing in a scoreless draw, Justin McMaster sent Bruno Lapa down the right sideline. Lapa delivered a cross into the box, where Holcomb hit a one-timer off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net for the winner.
"It was incredible win tonight," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We learned a lot about ourselves tonight. It took us until about mid-year last year to find out if we could play with a little bit of grit and grind out some wins and we did that here tonight. We got better later in the game and I think that showed because of our depth."
Wake Forest scuffled in the first half, failing to get a shot off. The first shot of the game found the back of the net three minutes into the second half, when a pass from Eddie Folds split two defenders to Omir Fernandez, who beat the keeper far post to put the Deacs up, 1-0.
"What a complete team win," Muuss said. "Indiana did a good job clogging lanes against us. Bruno hit an early service and Kyle does what he does, he gets in good spot to score goals, and does just enough to get it past possibly the best goalkeeper in college soccer."
Indiana answered in the 73rd minute when MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Griffin Dorsey scored from the right side of the box to knot the score at 1-1.
After being out-shot 10-2 in regulation, the Deacon offense came to life in overtime with a 6-2 shots advantage over the 16+ minutes of action.
Andreu Cases Mundet was strong in goal, saving five of the six shots on goal he faced to earn the win. Preseason All-American Trey Muse made three saves for Indiana.
The Hoosiers went the entire 2017 season without conceding multiple goals in a game.
The crowd of 4,751 fans was the fifth-biggest in program history, with all of the top-five marks coming since the start of the 2015 campaign. Wake Forest is 40-6-3 at Spry Stadium in the Muuss era.
"Even in lineups, I haven't heard it that loud in a long time. To get that game-winner and to see the guys sprint from the opposite end [to The Hill] in 10 seconds," Muuss said. "It means the world. We love this Wake Forest soccer community and student body. We just hope it continues for the rest of the year."
Wake Forest is back in action on Sunday, taking on ETSU at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
