Volleyball Falls to Maryland 3-0 in Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Wake Forest women's volleyball team (0-1) dropped its season opener to Maryland (1-0) 3-0 in the debut match of the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic on Friday.
Junior Caitlyn Della led the efforts for the Deacons tallying a team-high 10 kills in 19 attempts (.421). Sophomore Caroline Kuhn added nine kills to the team's total of 37 on the night, and sophomore setter Madeline Holt made 31 assists.
The Terrapins started the match hitting .345 in the first set to earn a 25-17 win. For the Deacons, Olivia Saunders came out strong with two kills on three attempts (.667), but timely kills from Maryland put the Deacons down a set early.
Maryland kept the momentum rolling with a 25-15 win in set two. Both teams put up nine kills, but Wake Forest's 12 errors allowed the Terrapins to take a two-set lead. A nine-point run gave the Terps an 18-6 advantage that the Deacons were unable to overcome. Kuhn and Della both posted three kills in the second set, while Holt made eight assists.
The Deacons battled back trying to force a fourth set, but ultimately came up short as the Terps came out on top with a 31-29 win in set three to clinch the victory. Both teams stayed neck-and-neck throughout the set, but it was Caroline Rassenfoss who tied the set at 25-25. An attack error from Maryland gave the Deacs a 26-25 advantage, but Maryland evened things up and posted back-to-back points, eventually ending the rally for the Deacons.
The Demon Deacons led the Terrapins in total attacks (114-100), assists (37-31) and solo blocks (4-3), but Maryland's efficiency at the net allowed the Terps to come out on top.
The Deacons continue action at the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic as they face Air Force and UNCG on Saturday at 11 and 7:30 p.m.
