CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 14 Wake Forest field hockey team (0-1) made the short trip to Chapel Hill to compete in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, but dropped the debut match to No. 20 Iowa (1-0) 2-1.
The Hawkeyes got off to a strong start, scoring both their goals in the first period. Wake Forest came out fighting in the second period as senior Megan Anderson scored the first goal of the 2018 season for the Deacons at the 56-minute mark to cut the deficit to one.
The Demon Deacons out-shot the Hawkeyes 15-11 and had one more shot on goal (9-8), but Iowa was able to use its momentum to take an early 2-0 lead in the first half that the Deacons could not overcome.
Senior Jule Grashoff led the efforts for the Deacons with six shots, four of which were on goal, but Iowa's goal keeper Leslie Speight found a way to hold her off. Freshman Eleanor Winants added three shots all on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Isla Bint made six saves in the 2018 debut, but the two goals allowed ultimately gave Iowa the victory.
The Deacons return to the field tomorrow at 11:30 to face no. 5 Michigan in their final match of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
