Former Demon Deacon guard (2003-06) named Director of Basketball Development
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Deacon Club has announced the hiring of former Wake Forest basketball standout Justin Gray as Director of Basketball Development. Gray joins the staff after recently retiring as a player following a 12-year professional career overseas.
As Director of Basketball Development, Gray will work to create an atmosphere of engagement and development among former basketball players. He will work with basketball alumni to support the program, both financially and through advocacy. In addition, he will serve as an ambassador for Wake Forest basketball at games and other community and university events.
"Wake Forest will always be a place dear to my heart," said Gray. "My time in college was a valuable part of my life and I really grew up during my years at Wake Forest. The opportunity to come back and be a part of the staff, and more importantly the Wake Forest family, is something that is special for me. I look forward to the opportunity to help the athletic department, especially the basketball program, and I am ready to get started."
Gray was a standout guard for the Demon Deacons during his four seasons from 2003-06, finishing his career as the eighth-leading scorer in Wake Forest history with 1,946 points. His 319 career 3-pointers ranks him second in school history and 8th in ACC history. Gray also ranks 11th in career assists (382) and 12th in career steals (138) in Wake Forest history. As a sophomore, we was first-team All-ACC selection, while earning second-team All-ACC honors as a junior in 2005 and as a senior in 2006. Gray graduated from Wake Forest in 2006 with a degree in communications.
Following graduation, Gray played professionally for 12 seasons overseas. His career took him to Belgium, Czech Republic, Poland, Greece, Ukraine, China, Germany, France, Turkey, Lebanon, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Belarus and Romania.
"We are excited to have Justin Gray come back to our program and our university," said head coach Danny Manning. "He brings a wealth of knowledge from his experiences, both in college and as a professional, that will make him a great resource to our current student-athletes. His love and passion for Wake Forest is undeniable and we are looking forward to feeling that energy on a daily basis."
