Freshmen Hartman and Surratt have memorable debuts
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Wake Forest opened the 2018 season with a 23-17 overtime victory at Tulane Thursday night at Yulman Stadium. Cade Carney's 1-yard touchdown run in overtime gave the Demon Deacons (1-0) a season-opening victory for the fourth straight season.
Freshmen headlined the win for Wake Forest, who saw several memorable debuts. Sam Hartman became the first Demon Deacon true freshman quarterback to win his first start, throwing for a school freshman record 378 yards, the 10th most passing yards in program history overall. His 31 completions, 51 attempts and two touchdowns were all school records for a true freshman in his first start. Hartman also had a team-high 64 yards rushing.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Sage Surratt had 11 catches for 150 yards, both school records for a freshman in his first career game.
Greg Dortch grabbed a career-high 12 receptions for 149 yards, his fourth career 100-yard game. He ended with 200 all-purpose yards, the seventh time in nine career games he has been over 100 all-purpose yards.
Defensively, Chris Calhoun led the team with a career-high 12 tackles. Essang Bassey tied a career high with three pass break-ups, in addition to seven tackles.
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Demon Deacons took the lead midway through the second quarter. A 14-play, 80-yard drive was capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Hartman to Alex Bachman. That proved to be the only score of the opening half as Wake Forest took a 7-0 lead into halftime.
On the opening drive of the second half, Tulane drew even when Jonathan Banks found Terren Encalade deep down the field for a 52-yard touchdown pass on a 3rd-and-15 play. The Deacs drove down the field on the ensuing drive to setup Nick Sciba's first career field, a 34-yard make, giving Wake Forest a 10-7 lead. Tulane took its first lead late in the third quarter on another deep pass from Banks to Encalade, this one for 74 yards to give the Green Wave a 14-10 lead.
Wake Forest retook the lead, 17-14, in the opening minute of the fourth quarter as Hartman connected Bachman for the second time. The 19-yard pass gave Bachman his first career multi-score game. A Tulane field goal with 3:27 remaining tied the game at 17-17, which was the score at the end of regulation.
In overtime, Tulane got the ball first after a penalty and three incompletions, the Green Wave had to go for it on 4th-and-25. The Deacs got the stop to end the series and give their offense a chance. Wake Forest kept it on the ground in overtime as Carney had six carries for 21 yards, including the game-winning 1-yard run.
Wake Forest will return home for a five-game homestand at BB&T Field. The home opener is September 8 when the Deacs host Towson at noon.
