Omir Fernandez and Alistair Johnston each scored in the final 20 minutes of the shutout victory.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- After a scoreless first 74 minutes, top-ranked Wake Forest rallied with two late goals to defeat Georgia Southern, 2-0, at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night.
While the Demon Deacons (6-0-0) controlled most of the game, it took until an Eagle (2-2-1) red card in the 54th minute before the Wake Forest offense really started churning.
That offense out-shot Georgia Southern 11-1 in the second half, including two which found the back of the net from Omir Fernandez and Alistair Johnston.
Fernandez scored his fourth goal of the past three games — his fifth overall — to put the Deacs on the board in the 75th minute. A pair of passes from Brad Dunwell and Isaiah Parente found Fernandez alone along the right side, and his left-footed shot beat the keeper near post for the goal.
Johnston scored his first in Old Gold & Black in the 87th minute. Kyle Holcomb settled down a long ball and dished it off to Tater Rennhack. Rennhack found Johnston alone at the top of the 18, where he dribbled once and finished past the keeper for the insurance goal.
"I thought the game was way too wide open, and we settled too much at the top of the box," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "You have to give Georgia Southern credit, but we played today the way we trained yesterday, which was sloppy. But we grinded out a midweek win and these things are tough."
Andreu Cases Mundet earned his second-straight shutout between the posts. The back line of Sam Raben, Michael DeShields, Logan Gdula, Eddie Folds and Holland Rula didn't concede a shot on goal, allowing just five total shots.
Wake Forest is slated to head to Blacksburg, Virginia to take on No. 16 Virginia Tech on Friday evening.
