No. 1 Wake Forest Rallies Past No. 16 Virginia Tech

Bruno Lapa and Omir Fernandez scored in the final 25 minutes to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory.

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- After falling behind for the first time this season, top-ranked Wake Forest rallied with two goals in the final 25 minutes to defeat No. 16 Virginia Tech on the road, 2-1, at Thompson Field on Friday night.

The Hokies' (4-1-2, 0-1-1 ACC) Sivert Haugli was handed a red card in the 30th minute, but Virginia Tech still scored in the 37th minute on a penalty kick from Jon Ingason to put the Demon Deacons (7-0-0, 2-0-0 ACC) behind for the first time this season.

The Deacon offense responded by taking control in the second half. Bruno Lapa executed a perfect give-and-go with Aristotle Zarris in the 66th minute, with Lapa finishing far post for the equalizer, his sixth goal this season.

Omir Fernandez netted his third game-winner in the 84th minute. Just seconds after subbing back in, Justin McMaster sent a through ball to Fernandez, who beat the keeper to push the Deacs ahead for the first time. The goal was Fernandez's sixth of the season, and his fifth of the last four games.

"We needed to wake up a little bit in the second half," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "Credit to Virginia Tech, two contrasting styles and we didn't do a good job up a man in the first half. The guys were frustrated and for the first time this year had to come back. We just were not good tonight. But to not play well and still come away with an ACC road win, we'll take it 100 percent, and take three points on the road, improve to 2-0 in conference and put ourselves in position to win the ACC regular season."

Lapa and Fernandez are both tied for the ACC's lead in goals, along with Boston College's Simon Enstrom, with six.

Wake Forest is now unbeaten in its last 11 road contests, including wins in each of the last eight.

"This conference is way too good for us to be grinding out wins the way we did all year," Muuss said. "The good thing is we now have a week before we play a really good Clemson team that's had our number at their place for a long time. We've got a lot of work to do the next seven days."

Wake Forest travels to take on the Tigers next Friday in a game that will be broadcast live on RSN.
