Wake Forest earned its first road win over the Tigers since 2009
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Top-ranked Wake Forest entered Friday night having won 21 straight games against ACC opponents. The last loss came nearly two years ago, at Clemson on Sept. 30, 2016.
Yet the Demon Deacons hadn't defeated the Tigers at Historic Riggs Field since 2009, until Wake Forest flipped that switch with a dominating 3-0 victory on Friday night to remain unbeaten and untied this year (8-0-0, 3-0-0 ACC).
"I thought it was a pretty professional performance from the guys from start to finish," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I'm just proud that we made the most of this week that we had to train since playing last Friday. The guys were bought in. It was our best week of training and that was reflected with our effort tonight."
Wake Forest got on the board less than 20 minutes into the game. Machop Chol beat a defender along the right sideline, sending a cross to the edge of the 6-yard box where Justin McMaster finished past the Tigers (4-3-1, 0-2-0 ACC) keeper at the 17:25 mark.
The Deacs added another goal in the 39th minute. Three consecutive quick passes in the box from Isaiah Parente to Alistair Johnston to Parente and then into Kyle Holcomb, who beat the keeper from close range for the score.
Aristotle Zarris capped off the scoring in the 76th minute. Chol dribbled around a defender and sent a cross into Zarris for the one-time finish.
Chol, a sophomore, made the first start of his career and dished out a pair of assists. Besides Chol's two assists and McMaster's goal, the other two goals and assists came from reserves.
"I'm extremely proud of Machop Chol for making his first-career start tonight and having such a big impact on the game. We have high expectations for Machop and he's lived up to them this year," Muuss added. "I was also excited about the way the reserves came in and took the game over with goals late in both halves. The spark they have provided us is one of the big reasons we've been successful all season."
Andreu Cases Mundet saved all three shots on goal he faced to earn his third shutout of the season. The Deacs had a 14-11 advantage in shots.
