Rookies Shine as No. 1 Wake Forest Beats Davidson, 5-1
9/25/2018 9:54:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Demon Deacon freshmen combined for three goals and a pair of assists and Bruno Lapa added a pair of goals in the victory.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The highly-touted freshman class for No. 1-ranked Wake Forest came through in a big way on Tuesday night in a 5-1 victory over Davidson at Spry Stadium.
The Demon Deacons' (9-0-0) rookies combined for three goals and a pair of assists, including the first-career goals for Holland Rula and Koby Carr — who was making his Wake Forest debut. Junior Bruno Lapa also added a pair of goals for his third brace of the season.
Aristotle Zarris — also a freshman — scored his third goal of the season in the 19th minute. A sequence of quick passes from Lapa and Logan Gdula found Zarris in the box for a one-timer finish.
The Wildcats (4-4-0) answered back just 71 seconds later, when Henry Howell connected with Stefane Zemmali for a header off a corner kick for the equalizer.
After the game was tied 1-1 at the half, the Deacs broke through with four second-half goals to pull away.
Rula scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 53rd minute. Isaiah Parente found Zarris in the box, who sent it wide to Rula. Rula delivered a clinical far-post shot into the back of the net to put Wake Forest ahead, 2-1.
Lapa scored the next two goals for the Deacs. He was kicked in the box in the 78th minute and put away the ensuing penalty kick to make the score 3-1. In the 88th minute, Machop Chol beat a defender along the right side and sent a cross into the 6-yard box for Lapa's tap-in finish.
Davidson took a corner kick with under a minute left in the game. Omir Fernandez took hold of a header clearance and dashed down the field, and sent a slip pass behind the defense to Carr who beat the keeper 1v1 to complete the break with just 16 seconds remaining.
"I give Davidson a lot of credit. They were extremely organized in the first half," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "In the second half we were even at 1-1, and Koby Carr got his first minutes after being cleared from injury last week, Holland Rula gets a goal today, Koby gets a goal today, Aristotle was fantastic — it was a real team win when you can play 19 guys."
Wake Forest had advantages in shots (16-8) and corner kicks (6-2), as well. Andreu Cases Mundet made three saves in the victory while Davidson keeper Sawyer Gaffney had five saves in the loss.
The Deacs are back in action on Saturday night, playing host to No. 15 Duke at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
