In front of a sold-out crowd of 4,937 fans, four different goal-scorers found the back of the net to beat the Blue Devils.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Top-ranked Wake Forest again battled from behind, using four different goal scorers to defeat No. 15 Duke, 4-2, in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,937 fans at Spry Stadium on Saturday night.
The Blue Devils (4-3-1, 1-2-0 ACC) scored the first goal of the game in the 41st minute from Ciaran McKenna, but the Demon Deacons (10-0-0) answered back with a goal before halftime and scored two more early in the second half to pull ahead for good.
Isaiah Parente answered less than three minutes later for the first goal of his collegiate career. Alistair Johnston dribbled through a trio of defenders and sent a cross into the box, where Parente beat the keeper with a header to knot the score at 1-1.
"We know we can create chances so you don't want to get rattled," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "Them scoring their goal woke us up a bit. At halftime, we challenged some of these guys who have been in big time games and big time moments. I thought we wasted a half of soccer today, but our response in the second half was class."
In the 54th minute, Parente took control of a Duke turnover, and just past midfield, sent Omir Fernandez behind the defense for a breakaway. Fernandez deflected a shot off the keeper and into the corner of the net to put the Deacs up, 2-1.
Bruno Lapa scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 67th minute. He and Logan Gdula executed a give-and-go inside the 18, beating the keeper for his ninth goal of the season.
A foul in the box set up a penalty kick for Daniele Proch in the 76th minute which brought Duke back within a goal, 3-2.
Machop Chol put the game away for good in the 81st minute, when Fernandez dribbled into the box and dished it to Chol for the low, far-post finish from eight yards out.
"I'm more proud of the way we scored the goals," Muuss added. "One was in transition, but a couple of them were big-time football. That's a credit to these guys. Coach Armas has done an incredible job with the [attackers]. We've been in front of goal a lot more this year in training, getting these guys comfortable with different types of finishing, and that's paid off."
Andreu Cases Mundet matched his season-high with five saves. On the other end, four of Wake Forest's five shots on goal found the back of the net.
The crowd of 4,937 fans is the highest this season and the third-highest in program history.
"The Wake Forest soccer community is incredible," Muuss said. "This is our only Saturday night game of the year and we wanted to entertain. At halftime, the team saw that they stopped letting fans come in. The fans deserved more [than our first-half performance], and I think we did that in the second half. We can't thank the fans enough."
Wake Forest has trailed in two of the last three ACC games, rallying to beat No. 16 Virginia Tech, 2-1, on Sept. 14 before earning the win over No. 15 Duke on Saturday.
The 10-0-0 start is the second-best in program history. The 2008 Deacs started the year 13-0-0 and 17-0-1, eventually reaching the College Cup and finishing 21-2-1 overall.
Wake Forest is next in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m., closing out a three-game homestand against UNCG on ACC Network Extra.
