The Matchup
• The top-ranked Demon Deacons hit the road for back-to-back ACC games, beginning with a trip to No. 16 Virginia Tech on Friday night. The game has been moved up to 5:30 p.m. due to Hurricane Florence, and will still air on ACC Network Extra.
Last Time Out
• Wake Forest rallied late with two goals in the final 16 minutes to earn a shutout victory over Georgia Southern on Tuesday, 2-0.
• Reigning ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week Omir Fernandez scored his fourth goal of the past three games with a 75th-minute game-winner.
• Alistair Johnston followed with his first goal in a Wake Forest uniform in the 87th minute to put the game away.
• Andreu Cases Mundet earned his second-straight shutout, this time without facing a shot on goal.
Quick Kicks
• Wake Forest was ranked No. 5 in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and moved up to No. 1 in the first weekly poll. The Deacs have been ranked in the top five in 24 consecutive polls dating back to the middle of the 2016 season - 21 more weeks than any other program (Michigan State - 3).
• The Deacs are once again one of the top teams in the country. Wake Forest is one of just three teams in Division I to remain unbeaten and untied (Rhode Island, Saint Mary's), and is second in the country with 18 goals, one off the national lead (19 - Saint Mary's).
• Wake Forest has won seven straight on the road, also holding a 10-game road unbeaten streak dating back to September 2016.
• Wake Forest has a lot of new faces after sending seven into the MLS ranks following the 2017 season. Still, the Deacs brought in the No. 2 recruiting class in the country, headlined by top-50 recruits Isaiah Parente, Kyle Holcomb, Koby Carr and Aristotle Zarris.
• Since the start of the Bobby Muuss era in 2015, Wake Forest has a 61-8-7 overall record. That win total is the most of any Division I program.
Opponent & Series History
• Wake Forest leads the all-time series against Virginia Tech, 19-3-2. The Deacs have won the last three meetings by a combined 8-0 score and are 16-1-1 in the last 18 meetings. This is the first time the Hokies have been ranked when the teams have played since 2006, however.
• The Hokies are still unbeaten this year, holding a 4-0-2 record. They played Virginia to a 1-1 draw in their ACC-opener.
• Mathijs Swaneveld has been strong in goal, with a 0.76 GAA and .839 save percentage.
Up Next
• The Demon Deacons travel to Clemson on Sept. 21 for an 8 p.m. game on RSN.
