Mitchell Powers Deacons over Penn at Mountaineer Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.VA.- Sophomore Myca Mitchell posted a career-high 18 kills to lead Wake Forest (4-6) over Penn 3-1 (25-14, 16-25, 25-13, 25-15) on Friday in the first game of the Mountaineer Classic hosted by West Virginia.
Mitchell's 18 kills came on 35 attempts for a .371 hitting percentage in the match. She has now set a new career-high in five games this season. Olivia Saunders and Caitlyn Della each added nine kills, while Caroline Kuhn and Caroline Rassenfoss both recorded eight. Saunders posted a .615 hitting percentage, only committing one error in 13 attempts. Sophomore setter Madeline Holt also recorded a season-high with 44 assists,
The Deacon offense hit .322 in the match, while holding the Quakers (3-7) to .118 and only 37 kills. Wake came out strong in the first set, recording 14 kills and just three errors in 26 attempts for a .423 attack percentage.
Penn rallied to take the second set evening the match at 1-1. Wake Forest committed an uncharacteristic match-high nine errors with only 10 kills as the Quakers took advantage of the miscues to take the second frame 25-16.
Wake Forest closed the match with a pair of convincing sets tallying 15 kills in the third set and a match-high 16 kills in the fourth set to seal the victory. Mitchell had her best set of the match in the third frame with six kills and a solo block. Penn's offense stalled as the Quakers could only get five kills on the board against Wake's forces at the net.
In the final set of the match, the Deacons did not commit an error- the first set this season that the Deacons have remained errorless. Mitchell and Kuhn combined for eight of the 16 kills in the set to power past the Quakers with a team .640 hitting percentage.
The Deacons wrap-up tournament play tomorrow at the Mountaineer Classic with a doubleheader against Morehead State at 1 p.m. and host West Virginia at 7 p.m.
