RALEIGH, N.C. – Goals from Hannah Betfort and Bayley Feist lifted the Wake Forest women's soccer team past No. 16 NC State, 2-0, Thursday evening at the Dail Soccer Field.
Playing for the first time in 11 days after their ACC home opener was postponed due to Hurricane Florence, the Demon Deacons (5-2-1, 1-0-0 ACC) won their second-consecutive conference opener after defeating Pitt last season. The Deacs also picked up their second win over a ranked opponent this season with the victory over the Wolfpack (7-2-1, 0-1-0 ACC).
Betfort put the Deacs on the board in the 10th minute with assists from Vicky Krug and Ryanne Brown while Feist doubled the score in the 74th minute with an assist from Kate Ravenna.
For the first Deacon goal, Krug passed the ball along the wing to a wide-open Brown. From there, Brown dribbled the ball into the box and passed it to Betfort on the far-right post, who snuck it past the keeper for her first goal of the season.
Peyton Perea tried to double the Deacons' lead in the 22nd minute with a longball. However, NC State's keeper was there for the save to keep the lead at 1-0 Wake Forest. The Deacs had two more attempts in the 33rd minute as Abby McNamara took a long shot from the corner that was caught by the keeper at the post and Oliwia Wos shot from far outside the box right into the keeper's grab.
After missing nonconference play due to injury, Mariah Lee, a graduate transfer from Stanford, saw the field for the first time as a Demon Deacon, checking in at the 33rd minute. She earned a free kick after being fouled just outside of the 18-yard box in the 42nd minute. Perea took the free kick but the ball sailed high over the top of the goals.
The Deacs dominated possession in the opening half, holding a 7-3 advantage in shots with a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
Entering the second half with a 1-0 lead, Hulda Arnarsdottir nearly doubled the lead for Wake Forest in the 48th minute. After earning possession of the ball at midfield, she drove down the field to take a shot from just inside the box. The ball sailed over the keeper's head but hit the crossbar to keep the 1-0 lead.
Estelle Laurier had a chance of her own in the 58th minute. She went head-to-head with the Wolfpack's keeper, who managed to deflect Laurier's shot with a diving play. Betfort then went for her second goal of the evening in the 63rd minute, but the ball was deflected by a sliding Wolfpack defender.
NC State nearly had the equalizing goals in the 71st and 72nd minute, but the first hit the cross bar and the second cruised just outside the far post of the goal.
However, it was Feist that doubled the lead for the Deacons in the 74th minute. After earning back-to-back corners, Wos served the ball on the second corner. Eventually Ravenna connected with Feist, who found the back of the net to give Wake Forest a 2-0 lead.
The Deacs finished with a 18-10 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. Wake Forest also lead 8-3 in corner kicks.
Reci Smith checked in for the Deacons in the 82nd minute, her first appearance since an injury on Oct. 8, 2017. She had a shot on goal as time expired.
Nonie Frishette played all 90 minutes in goal, recording two saves en route to her fourth solo shutout of the season.
Head coach Tony da Luz is now just one win away from his 300th career victory at 299-200-47.
The Demon Deacons return to Spry Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 23 to face Notre Dame. Kick is set for 12 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. Fans can bring three canned food items to donate to hurricane relief efforts and receive free admission.
