Women’s Tennis Opens Season at Furman Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C.- After its original fall season opener was canceled due to Hurricane Florence, Wake Forest women's tennis made its fall debut at the Furman Invitational on Friday.
In singles, all 10 players competed, but only two came out with wins in their respective flights. Junior Chandler Carter earned the first win of the day. After falling in the first set, Carter rallied back to take the net two sets, defeating Tijana Spasojevic from Texas 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Freshman Peyton Pesavento made strong showing in her collegiate debut with a hard-fought three set, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 7-5 decision against Janina Braun of Mississippi State.
Preseason No. 16 Emma Davis was upset 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), falling to Ingrid Martins of USC. In the second doubles flight, Eliza Omirou won the first set 6-3, but her opponent rallied back to take the next two sets 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
In flight four, Anna Ulyashchenko fell to Vanderbilt's Carolyn Campana. Campana took the first set. Ulyashchenko battled back to even the match at 1-1, but ultimately fell in the third set, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Freshman Anna Brylin also dropped in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
Joanna Zalewski, Alexis Franco, Mary Meredith and freshman Saby Nihalani all fell in two sets in flights five through nine.
On the doubles courts, Davis and Carter fell in their first match of the day 8-3 to a pair from Ohio State, but rebounded in the backdraw with an 8-6 win over Vanderbilt.
Omirou and Brylin defeated Vanderbilt 8-7 (7-5), but fell to Mississippi State 8-5 in their second match of the day. Ulyashchenko and Pesavanto also picked up a first-round win, defeating a USC duo 8-7 (7-5), but dropped to Florida State, 8-6. Franco and Nihalani followed suit with a first round, 8-7 (7-3) win over Mississippi State, but were defeated 8-5 by host Furman.
The Deacons will continue the tournament on Saturday with doubles beginning at 9 a.m., and singles starting at 10:15.
