WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
No. 1-ranked Wake Forest earned its first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over No. 8 NC State Friday night at Spry Stadium.

Despite a 45-minute weather delay, 4,023 fans showed up Friday night to watch the Demon Deacons (5-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) open ACC play against in-state rival NC State (4-1-0, 0-1-0 ACC).

"We were in control of the game from the start," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "I thought we did a good job of clogging the lanes, but we have to get better defensively. It was a focus of ours to slow down NC State's transition, and I think we did a really good job of that. The guys did a great job. The guys bought in today and they wanted a shutout badly. This group needed that."

Omir Fernandez put the Demon Deacons on the board in the 24th minute. Up at midfield, Brad Dunwell passed the ball to Logan Gdula, who sent a cross sailing to Fernandez. Fernandez tapped the ball in at the far post to give the Deacs an early 1-0 lead.

Fernandez nearly doubled the lead in the 29th minute with a rocket of a shot, but the Wolfpack keeper tipped the ball over the crossbar. Justin McMaster quickly followed with an attempt of his own in the 32nd minute when he beat out a defender to take a shot. However, NC State's keeper made the sliding save to maintain the Deacs' 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Wake Forest defense, anchored by Gdula, Michael DeShields, Sam Raben and Eddie Folds clamped down on NC State in the opening frame, holding the Wolfpack without a shot the entire 45-minute half. Meanwhile, the Deacs held a 5-0 advantage in shots, with a 4-0 edge in attempts on goal. NC State finally got its first shot of the night in the 48th minute.

In the 69th minute, Fernandez recorded his second goal of the night and third of the season to put the Deacs up 2-0. Bruno Lapa sent the ball soaring towards Justin McMaster, who crossed it to Fernandez for a one timer and the goal.

The Demon Deacons lead increased to 3-0 on an own-goal from NC State. The Deacs launched a free kick that landed right in front of the goal line. The ball bounced off the ground and hit the knee of a NC State defender before landing in the back of the net.

Wake Forest held a 14-3 advantage in shots en route to its first shutout of the season. Andreu Cases Mundet played all 90 minutes, recording one save for his 18th career solo shutout.

The Demon Deacons return to action Tuesday, Sept. 11 against Georgia Southern. That game is set for 7 p.m.
