WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Four Demon Deacons scored as the Wake Forest women's soccer team posted a 6-0 shutout victory over Longwood Sunday night at Spry Stadium.
The win is the largest margin of victory and the most goals scored in a single game since a 6-0 win over Liberty on Oct. 30, 2001.
Abby McNamara, Peyton Perea, Giovanna DeMarco and Kate Ravenna all netted the ball for the Demon Deacons (4-2-1) in the program's first-ever match against the Lancers (2-4-1).
"Tonight was great," said head coach Tony da Luz. "It's great to bounce back from South Carolina. The girls played really well tonight and the movement off the ball was great as well. I thought we scored some pretty nice, quality goals and it was nice to spread it around. Hopefully we remember how we played tonight, just keeping it simple. If we do that up next against Boston College, then we definitely have a chance to win."
McNamara opened the offense for the Deacs in just the 7th minute. Estelle Laurier beat out a defender in the bottom corner of the box to send a sharp pass to McNamara, who one-timed the ball just past the diving keeper.
Perea doubled the Deacons' lead in the 42nd minute. Bri Carney served a corner kick and sent the ball sailing towards DeMarco at the top of the box. DeMarco passed the ball behind her to Perea, who launched the ball into the back of the net.
DeMarco recorded the second goal of her career in the 67th minute to put the Deacs up 3-0. Perea sent the ball cruising from midfield to DeMarco, who shot it from 10-yards out.
Perea knocked down her second goal of the night and third of the season in the 71st minute on a direct free kick from 20-yards out. Sunday's match was Perea's first multi-goal game with a total of five points on two goals and an assist.
McNamara recorded her second goal of the night and third of the season in the 76th minute. Laurier played the ball into the box, allowing McNamara to spin around a defender and hit the net.
The final goal came in the 83rd minute after the Deacons drew a foul and were awarded a penalty kick. Celebrating her senior night, Ravenna was assigned the shot. Ravenna launched a rocket into the left side of the net for her first-career goal.
The Demon Deacons out-shot the Lancers 25-4, including a 16-1 advantage on shots on goal. Sunday's shot count was the highest since Sept. 11, 2015 when the Deacs also had 25 shots, 16 on goal, against Davidson. Fourteen of the Deacs' 25 attempts came in the first half while the Wake Forest defense held the Lancers without a shot in the second half. Perea led the way with six shots, matching her career high, while four of those were on goal, a new career high. Laurier had three shots, DeMarco, Ashley Frank and McNamara had two each while Ravenna had one.
Nonie Frishette posted her third solo shutout of the year and fifth of her career while recording one save.
At the beginning of the game, Frank and McNamara made their first career starts. Frank played a total of 49 minutes while McNamara clocked 56.
Up next, the Demon Deacons open ACC play against Boston College in Spry Stadium on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
