Ivana Raca’s 21 points propels Wake Forest to 52-42 over Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Behind 21 points from Ivana Raca, the Wake Forest women's basketball team collected their first ACC win of the year with a 52-42 victory over Virginia Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena.

Raca's 21 points were one shy of matching her career high of 22, which she set in the season opener against Towson. The sophomore was 7-of-16 from the field and neared a double-double with eight rebounds.

Wake Forest 10-10 (1-6 ACC) dominated the glass, outrebounding the Cavaliers 8-12 (2-5 ACC), 48-33. Ona Udoh led the charge with 11 rebounds, her eighth game with double-digit rebounds, while Christina Morra added five of the bench.

The Deacs clamped down on the defensive end as Virginia shot 25.9 percent from the field. The 25.9 percent shooting effort was second-lowest opponent shooting percentage of the season and lowest shooting percentage by an ACC team this year against Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons controlled the pace early, jumping out to an 11-2 lead over the Cavaliers. Ona Udoh scored Wake Forest's first four points, setting the tone early for the Deacs. Wake Forest's stingy defense held Virginia scoreless over a span of 8:32 in the opening period before taking a 13-7 lead into the second quarter.

Wake Forest then began to heat up from beyond the arc in the second, connecting on three from beyond the arc to maintain their advantage. Kaylen Dickson had a pair of three-pointers fall, including one with 29 seconds left, giving the Deacs a 27-15 lead into halftime. The 15 points are tied for the fewest points allowed this season, as the Demon Deacons also allowed 15 points in the first half against VCU.

The Cavaliers were limited to just 6-of-27 (22.2 percent) shooting in the first 20 minutes while being outrebounded 29-11. Wake Forest's defense clogged the passing lines, holding Virginia to one assist in the opening half.

Maya Banks sparked the Demon Deacon attack early in the second half, scoring six points off the bench early in the third as the Deacs' lead grew to 17. The Cavaliers responded, chipping away at Wake Forest's lead. Virginia ended the third quarter with a 9-0 run, bringing Wake Forest's advantage down to single digits.

Virginia continued to press Wake Forest, cutting the Deacs' lead down to four. But Wake Forest countered, scoring eight of the final 10 points to close out the victory. Conti scored the first three points on an old-fashioned three-point play before Raca closed the game out with five consecutive points.

The Deacs return to action this Thursday, January 31, playing host to NC State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
