No. 6 Deacs Score Three Times in Second Half to Beat No. 20 NC State

10/11/2019 9:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Bruno Lapa recorded two goals in the final six minutes to lead Wake Forest to the 3-1 lead.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Bruno Lapa scored twice in the final six minutes to lead No. 6 Wake Forest past No. 20 NC State, 3-1, at Dail Soccer Park on Friday night.

All four goals came in the final 18 minutes. Kyle Holcomb started the scoring for the Demon Deacons (10-2-0, 4-1-0 ACC) in the 73rd minute off a Tater Rennhack assist.

A handball in the box gave the Wolfpack's (7-3-1, 3-2-0 ACC) Gabriel Machado the game-tying goal in the 76th minute.

Lapa netted the game-winner at the 84:57 mark, finishing off a rebound from Aristotle Zarris to push the Deacs ahead, 2-1.

He added another goal with nine seconds left in regulation, stealing the ball and, after his initial shot was saved, putting away his own rebound.

"What a result on the road against a great NC State team," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "This is a tough place to play and being down some key players, this team found a way to win. I'm proud of the group for earning a great team win despite the adversity."

Wake Forest also reached the 10-win mark for the eighth-straight season, clinching a winning record.

The Wolfpack had a 10-9 advantage in shots, but the Deacs put seven on target compared to just four for NC State. Lapa totaled a game-high five shots, all of them on frame.

Andrew Pannenberg made a pair of highlight-reel saves in goal for the Deacs. Lapa also cleared a ball off the line to help keep NC State from taking a lead in the second half.

Wake Forest is back in action on Tuesday night, playing host to William & Mary on ACCNX.
