ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest women's golf team began play Monday at the East Lake Cup with the stroke play competition at the prestigious event. Sophomore Vanessa Knecht shot 3-under to share medalist honors for her first collegiate win, while the Demon Deacons will be the No. 3 seed for match play, which begins Tuesday.
Knecht made five birdies to just two bogeys during a 3-under 69, tying with Duke's Ana Belac for medalist honors. The tournament's stroke play portion consisted of just Monday's 18 holes, with the team standings used for seeding for the match play event.
The Demon Deacons shot 4-over as a team on Monday to earn the No. 3 seed, and will play No. 2 seed Arizona (even) in the semifinals. No. 1 seed Duke (2-under) will play No. 4 seed Auburn (7-over) in the other semifinal. The event features the four semifinalists from last year's NCAA Championship.
"Vanessa's scoring average just keeps getting better and better," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "She kept working to improve and was really looking forward to this event. You have to strike the ball well on this course and her play today is a testament to her hard work."
Siyun Liu was T-6th with an even par round of 72. Emilia Migliaccio shot 75, Lauren Walsh shot 76 and Rachel Kuehn shot 77 to round out the lineup for the Demon Deacons.
The Wake Forest-Arizona match will begin at 12:45 p.m. with coverage on Golf Channel beginning at 3 p.m.
"With the ACC Tournament going to match play, and the NCAA having been match play for a while, this experience is so valuable," said Lewellen. "The more we can play team match play, the more comfortable we will be with the format when we get to those championships."
