11/10/2019 5:22:00 PM | Men's Basketball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Brandon Childress's jumper with 1.2 seconds to play lifted Wake Forest to a 65-63 win over Columbia in its home opener at the LJVM Coliseum. The Demon Deacons improve to 1-1 on the season with the victory, while the Lions fall to 0-2.

Chaundee Brown scored 20 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Demon Deacons, posting his ninth career 20-point game. Brown had 13 of his 20 points in the second half, including four points in the final minute as the Deacs rallied from down four in the final 50 seconds. Childress finished with 11 points while freshman Jahcobi Neath led the team with three assists.

Mike Smith scored 23 points and had seven assists to lead Columbia.

Both teams got off to a cold shooting start, but an 11-0 run midway through the first half gave the Deacs their first lead of the game. The run was fueled by the Wake freshmen, as Ismael Massoud, Ody Oguama and Neath scored 10 of the team's first 16 points. The teams traded the lead for the remainder of the first half with the Deacs holding a 26-25 lead at the break.

Columbia used a 7-0 run early in the second half to take a 39-34 lead with 14:00 to play. The Deacs rallied to reclaim the lead, 43-42, with 8:30 to play. A 13-2 run extended the lead to 52-44, the Deacs' largest lead of the afternoon. The Lions answered with a 9-0 run to retake the lead, 53-52 with 4:00 to go. After the Lions went up 63-59 with 51 seconds to play, a Brown layup-and-1 cut the margin to 63-62 with 41.7 left. Childress drew an offensive foul to get the Deacs the ball back and Brown was fouled on the next possession. Brown made the first free throw to tie the game with 15.8 left before the rebound of the second attempt went out of bounds off Columbia to give Wake the ball for a final shot. Childress' turnaround jumper with 1.2 seconds left hit every part of the rim before falling to give the Deacs a 65-63 lead.

Wake Forest overcame a tough shooting game, making just 35.5 percent from the floor, by outrebounding Columbia 47-38 and holding the Lions without an offensive rebound in the second half and just three for the game. The Deacs also outscored Columbia 19-7 from the free throw line.

The Demon Deacons return to action on Wednesday as they host UNC Asheville. Game time at the LJVM Coliseum is 7 p.m.
