Raca Scores Career-High 23 in Loss to Charlotte

11/15/2019 9:07:00 PM | Women's Basketball

The 49ers rebounded from a slow start to defeat the Deacs, 77-65.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Ivana Raca scored a career-high 23 points, but Wake Forest fell to Charlotte, 77-65, inside the LJVM Coliseum on Friday night.

Raca also sank a career-best four 3-pointers, totaling her 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting, and added six boards and three assists. Ona Udoh chipped in 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting and six rebounds for the Demon Deacons (2-2).

Jade Phillips led the 49ers (3-0) with 21 points on 10-of-17 from the floor and 12 rebounds.

The Deacs went on an early 11-0 run to take a 16-6 advantage in the first quarter, capped by a Gina Conti triple.

Charlotte responded with an immediate 8-0 run to get back in the game, cutting the margin to 22-19 after a quarter. The 49ers outscored the Deacs 21-12 in the second quarter to take a 40-34 lead into the break, which Charlotte never relented.

"We have to give Charlotte credit, they called a timeout and made adjustments and we didn't recover from that," head coach Jen Hoover said. "Nobody shot the ball well for us besides Ivana Raca and Ona Udoh. We need to keep moving the ball to get better looks and make our open shots."

The 49ers extended their lead to 65-47 early in the fourth quarter before the Deacs started chipping away. Alex Sharp scored four straight points during a 10-2 Wake Forest run to cut the margin to 67-57 at the 3:23 mark.

Charlotte answered with four consecutive points to push its lead back to 14. Raca hit a pair of treys in the final 90 seconds to trim the deficit to single digits in the final minute, but the 49ers made their last four free throws to ice the game.

For Wake Forest, Conti totaled seven points and a team-high six assists, while Sharp and Kaia Harrison scored six points apiece. Sharp also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.

Wake Forest has played four games in 11 days to open the season. Now, the Deacs will get a week-long break before their first road trip to St. John's next Friday, Nov. 22.

"I think it will be good for this team to take a road trip and have some team bonding time," Hoover said. "But first we've got an important week of practice to work on finding a way to score the basketball and improve our mental toughness."
