CHARLOTTE- Wake Forest basketball fell to Charlotte 67-65 in overtime on Sunday night. Brandon Childress led the Deacs with 19 points and four assists. Olivier Sarr added a career-best four blocks to go along with seven points and a team-best 13 boards.
"Tough ballgame on the road," head coach Danny Manning said. "Charlotte had a very active and excited home crowd and they really fed off that energy. We did some things to claw back into the game late and force overtime, we just didn't finish the game the way we needed to."
The 49ers (2-1) took an early 13-4 lead after a 12-0 run that gave them their largest lead of the half. The Deacs hit four first-half 3-pointers to chip away at the lead and regain a 25-24 advantage on a jumper from Chaundee Brown.
The teams went into the break tied 29-all as Charlotte's Jahmir Young hit a triple with just over one-minute remaining. Defenses made stops down the stretch as neither team could take a lead before time expired in the first half.
Charlotte regained a four-point lead following a pair of free throws and a layup to open the second half. Isaiah Mucius snapped a four-minute scoring drought with a fast-break dunk to cut the Deacs' deficit to two 38-36. Brown hit his first three of the year to bring the Deacons within one and Sarr connected on two free throws to tie the game up at 43 with under nine minutes to play. Charlotte jumped back in front, but Andrien White hit a three to square things up once again.
A 6-0 run pushed Charlotte's lead to 54-48 with 4:21 remaining, forcing the Deacons to call a timeout. Sarr converted on an And-1 putting Wake within three at 54-51. Childress hit a long three with 1:15 to play, tying the game at 54-all following a 6-0 run. Sarr notched his career-high fourth block of the game, giving the Wake another chance offensively. The Niners picked up a defensive rebound, taking possession with 34 seconds to play.
Charlotte's Malik Martin hit a triple to put the 49ers back in front with just 21.9 seconds remaining. Ismael Massoud answered back with a three of his own for a career-high eight points, knotting up the score 57-57. Charlotte got off the last shot, but it was no good as Wake faced overtime for the first time this season.
The 49ers opened the OT period with a 6-0 run connecting on three pairs of free throws. Brown cut the lead back down to two with another triple and a layup, but Charlotte was quick to answer back taking a 67-62 lead. Childress hit his third three of the night to put Wake within two with 44 seconds remaining.
Isaiah Mucius pulled down the defensive rebound giving Wake Forest a chance to take the lead, but a missed three-pointer and defensive rebound for Charlotte sealed the victory for the 49ers.
Wake Forest will continue its six-game road trek, as the Deacs return to Charlotte on Friday, Nov. 22 to face Davidson at the Spectrum Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 on ESPN+.
