CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Wake Forest used a second half surge break open a three-point game at the half and post an 82-70 victory over Davidson on Friday night at Spectrum Center. Five Deacs scored in double figures as they improved to 3-2 on the season. The Wildcats fell to 2-3.
Brandon Childress led Wake Forest with 18 points and seven assists. Torry Johnson, making his first start of the season in place of an injured Chaundee Brown, had 15 points, the most in his Wake Forest career. Olivier Sarr (15 points, all in the second half, and 12 rebounds) and Isaiah Mucius (11 points, career-high 10 rebounds) each recorded their first career double-double. Andrien White scored 11 points to also post double-figure scoring.
"We always know it is next man up, and that was the case tonight," said head coach Danny Manning. "You have to give a shoutout to Torry Johnson. Brandon got in foul trouble early, so Torry ended up playing 32 minutes. He shot the ball tremendously from the field and had 15 points. Those 32 minutes were very valuable to us and we appreciate that senior leadership."
The teams traded early runs, with the Deacs starting the game on a 7-0 run, followed by a 8-0 run by Davidson. Wake used a 9-1 run midway through the opening half to take a 16-9 lead followed by a 7-0 Wildcat run to tie the game. The Deacs took a 32-29 advantage into halftime as Johnson had eight first-half points to lead the team.
Wake came out of halftime on fire, making its first six field goals of the second half, including three from long range, to push the lead to 47-33 with 16:00 to go. The Deacs continued the surge to take a 70-47 lead with just over 8:00 to play, their largest lead of the season. Davidson would only get within 12 points, the final margin, the rest of the way as Wake closed out the road victory.
The Demon Deacons shot 61.3 percent from the floor, including 53.8 percent from deep, after halftime as they finished with 10 made triples for the game. Wake Forest also had a 43-29 advantage on the boards, leading to an 18-3 edge in second chance points.
The Demon Deacons continue their six-game road trip on Thanksgiving as they meet Charleston in the first round of the Wooden Legacy in Anaheim, Calif. Game time is 4:30 p.m. ET and the game will air on ESPNews.
